Sunny Balwani, the former president and COO of Theranos, has been sentenced to 12 years and nine months in prison by a California judge on December 7, 2022. The 57-year-old was found guilty of all charges of fraud brought against him.

Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos and Balwani’s former girlfriend, was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison on November 18, 2022.

Before his relationship with Holmes began in 2002, Balwani was married to Keiko Fujimoto.

Who is Keiko Fujimoto?

Keiko Fujimoto is the former wife of Sunny Balwani, the former COO of the Silicon Valley company Theranos.

When Holmes first accused Balwani of sexually abusing her, Fujimoto defended her former husband by saying that Holmes’ claims were “false and inflammatory”.

Fujimoto was raised in Tokyo and moved to the United States for her studies. She reportedly obtained an MS degree in Information Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Charmpaign.

Fujimoto and Balwani met when the latter was working at Microsoft. As a married couple, they resided in San Francisco. According to court documents, she applied for divorce from Balwani on February 14, 2022. Their status as a married couple ended on December 31, 2002.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Fujimoto has been working at the company Applied Materials for close to 33 years.

Balwani and Holmes had kept their relationship under wraps until 2019, when they had to disclose the same in court.

The sentencing of Balwani brings to a close a chapter in Silicon Valley history unlike any other. Holmes, who was featured on the cover of Forbes magazine, was seen as the new-age Steve Jobs who would revolutionise the medical industry with her new device. She is now a disgraced fraudster who has appealed her sentence of 11 years and three months.
