Virginia Senator L Louis Lucas offered her condolences to the victims of the November 22 mass shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake. According to police, a gunman shot and killed several people in a Walmart store in the US state of Virginia late on November 22. The single shooter suspect, according to police, is also dead.

The incident occurred days before Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. Virginia state Senator Louise Lucas, who represents the Chesapeake region, which is located 150 miles (240 kilometers) southeast of the US capital Washington, said she was “absolutely heartbroken.”

She tweeted, “I am absolutely heartbroken that America’s latest mass shooting took place in Walmart in my district in Chesapeake, Virginia tonight. I will not rest until we find solutions to end this gun violence epidemic in our country that has taken so many lives.”

Who is L Louis Lucas?

Lillie Louise Lucas, born January 22, 1944, is a Virginia state senator who has represented the 18th District in the state’s southeast since 1992. As Democrats won a majority of seats in the 2019 Virginia Senate election, Lucas succeeded Republican Stephen Newman as President pro tempore of the Virginia Senate.

She is the first African American woman to hold that position. Lucas was born in the Virginia town of Portsmouth. She attended Portsmouth public schools, even when they were closed due to Massive Resistance.

Lucas earned a Bachelor of Science in Vocational-Industrial Education from Norfolk State University in 1976. In 1982, she received a Master of Arts degree in Urban Affairs with a concentration in Human Resources Planning and Administration, graduating magna cum laude.

Senator Lucas has two daughters, Lisa L. Lucas-Burke and Theresa Lynn Lucas-Lamb, who work with her in a variety of business ventures. She was the mother of one son, the late Jeffery Lee Lucas. Before his death in 2014, her husband, Otis M. Lucas, who remarried after their divorce, also worked for various Lucas entities. She is the grandmother of five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
