Larry Ray was convicted of extortion and forcing into labor or prostitution some women he met at his daughter’s on-campus housing at Sarah Lawrence College. He was sentenced Friday to 60 years in prison in Manhattan federal court by Judge Lewis J Liman, who described his crimes as “particularly heinous.”

Who is Larry Ray?

Larry Ray is 63 years old. He was born in 1959 in Brooklyn, New York. Later, he portrayed himself as a former Marine and impressed his followers with war stories that demonstrated his bravery but he actually only served 19 days with the Air Force in 1981, according to New York Magazine. Reportedly, he worked on Wall Street in the 1980s, did some consultancy, and was a restaurant partner.

Later, he got involved in the world of business and politics and eventually became friends with former New York City police commissioner Bernie Kerik. He also served as Kerik’s best man at his wedding and arranged a meeting between then-New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and Mikhail Gorbachev, the former leader of the Soviet Union, according to The Outlet.

In 2003, Ray was convicted of securities fraud and was sentenced to five years of probation. He ended up in prison in 2007 after violating his probation.

Ray set up himself as a fixture in his daughter Talia Ray’s life in 2010 after he was released from prison and moved into her dorm room at Sarah Lawrence College. He started holding therapy sessions with his daughter’s friends to help them with their psychological problems, according to court documents.

Using tactics such as sleep deprivation, humiliation, violence, or threats. Ray forced some of his victims to confess to supposed crimes videos, which he later used to extort money from them, authorities said. The years of abuse and manipulation finally came to an end after the shocking revelations in New York Magazine in 2019, catching the attention of the FBI and initiating a formal investigation.

He was convicted in April of 15 charges including racketeering conspiracy, violent crime in aid of racketeering, extortion, sex trafficking, forced labor, tax evasion, and money laundering offenses.
