Rapper Lil Tjay, born Tione Jayden Merritt, was reportedly shot near a shopping plaza in Edgewater, New Jersey.

According to TMZ, there were two shootings in the area, one at a Chipotle Restaurant and another at an Exxon Gas station. It’s unknown which location Lil Tjay was shot. Two other individuals were injured in the incidents.

The 21-year-old was airlifted to Hackensack University Medical Center in critical condition after being shot multiple times, Daily Voice reported. His injuries were considered life-threatening. The rapper was said to be undergoing an emergency surgery.

A second victim, Vic Antoine Boyd, 22, was suffered non life-threatening injuries after being shot in the back, sources reportedly said.

The motive behind the shootings or what triggered them are unknown.

Born and raised in the Bronx, the rapper is known for the songs “Calling My Phone,” “Not in the Mood.” His most recent hit, “In My Head,” which has over 12 million views on YouTube. He has 7 million followers on Instagram.

Lil Tjay’s debut studio album, True 2 Myself, was released in 2019. In 2020, he released the mixtape State of Emergency that features only drill artists from New York City.

True 2 Myself debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200, marking the album his first charted release. His second studio album, Destined 2 Win, was released in 2021.

Lil Tjay was raised by a single mother and has two younger siblings. 

At the age of 15, he was arrested for a robbery and was sentenced for a year to a youth detention center.

Lil Tjay accompanied Seattle rapper Lil Mosey on his nationwide tour throughout 2019. He also has performed at the three-day Rolling Loud Miami music festival, along with Migos, Travis Scott, and Kid Cudi in Miami Gardens, Florida in May 2019 and at the Los Angeles festival in December.
