Maggie Hassan, a Democrat, will be contesting the upcoming New Hampshire primary elections and is seeking to retain her seat in the US Senate. The polls are scheduled for September 13, 2022.

Maggie Hasan assumed office on January 3, 2017, at the age of 59 and her current term ends on January 3, 2023. She previously served as the state’s governor between 2013 and 2017.

Who is Maggie Hassan?

Maggie Hassan was born on February 27, 1958, in Massachusetts. Her father Robert Coldwell Wood was a political scientist, who also served as US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in President Lyndon Johnson’s administration. 

She attended Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School in Massachusetts. She graduated in 1980 with a major in history from Brown University and later received a Juris degree from the Northeastern University School of Law in 1985.

Before entering politics, Maggie Hassan served as an information officer for the Massachusetts Department of Social Services from 1980 to 1982. She then worked as an attorney for Palmer and Dodge from 1985 to 1992. From 1993 to 1996 she was the attorney for Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Partners Healthcare.

In 1999, Governor Jeanne Shaheen hired her to serve as an advocate on the Advisory Committee of the Adequacy in Education and Finance Commission.

In 1983, she married Thomas Edward Hassan who was the principal of Phillips Exeter Academy. The couple has two children. 

Maggie Hassan’s political career

She first ran for the New Hampshire elections in 2002 but she lost to incumbent Russell Prescott. In 2004, she ran against Russell Prescott and won with 52% of the vote and assumed office in the State Senate.

In 2008, she defeated Lee Quandt with 57% votes and served as the Senate majority leader and represented New Hampshire’s 23rd district. 

In 2013, Maggie Hassan won the elections and assumed office as the Governor of New Hampshire and she currently serves as a member of the US Senate.
