Maya Wiley is a top lawyer in the civil division for the U.S. Attorney%u2019s office in Manhattan and a civil rights activist, and candidate for New York City Mayor.  In January 2014, Wiley served as counsel to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and chaired the Civilian Complaint Review Board from 2016 to 2017. She worked for the NAACP Legal Defense, Educational Fund, and American Civil Liberties Union before becoming the counsel to the Mayor.

Wiley announced her candidacy in the 2021 New York City Mayoral election on October 7, 2020. She is the senior vice president for social justice at The New School and a professor at the Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment. She also appeared on MSNBC as a political and legal analyst before jumping into the mayor%u2019s race.

As the campaigns have started, New York Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Maya Wiley on Saturday in the mayor%u2019s race. As of now, Wiley has the support of two of the state%u2019s highest-profile members of congress in Ocasio-Cortez, she represents parts of the Queens and the Bronx, and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Chair of the House Democratic Caucus. There is a sign of progressive momentum behind Wiley%u2019s campaign with less than three weeks until the June 22 Democratic primary.
