Maya
Zamorah, a 10-year-old girl, was the last survivor of the Uvalde school
shooting to leave the hospital. She was discharged from San Antonio University
Health Hospital on July 29. Zamorah was recently invited to throw the first
pitch at the Houston Astros game at Minute Maid Park. She threw the first pitch
at the invitation of the Correa Family Foundation.

Zamorah
returned to the news after the non-profit that invited her to throw the first pitch
at a baseball game also announced that it would, with the help of other donors,
build her and her family a new home. The need for a new home arose while Zamorah
was at the hospital. She learned that Uvalde shooter Salvador Ramos lived a few
blocks away from her home. This knowledge did not let her return to her
childhood home after spending 66 days at the hospital.

Who is
Maya Zamorah?

Maya
Zamorah was one of the victims of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in
Uvalde, Texas. The shooting that took 19 lives, including that of 17 students
and two teachers, was the deadliest school shooting in US history. The Uvalde
shooting had reminded many of the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in
2012.

At Uvalde,
the shooter was an 18-year-old – Salvador Ramos. Ramos reportedly lived a few
blocks away from Zamorah’s home. News reports since the shooting have indicated
that Ramos was an at-risk kid. Recently, a new report showed that Ramos’ body
was kept in the morgue for nearly a month
as funeral homes refused to take it,
according to the Independent.

Zamorah,
the 10-year-old girl, walked out of the hospital gifting roses to nurses and other
hospital staff, according to a video shared by the hospital captioned: “Today
was a happy day at University Hospital! Our final patient from the Uvalde
shooting, 10-year-old Mayah Zamorah, was discharged! She passed out roses and
left in style thanks to @HEB. She is our hero and we can’t wait to see all she
accomplishes in the future #MayahStrong.”

In course
of the shooting, Mayah had suffered injuries to her hands, chest and back. She
had to undergo 20 surgeries and spent 66 days at the hospital. Once out of the
hospital, she will soon be shifting to a new home.
