A man from Durham has been arrested following a Wednesday incident in which a person was seen brandishing a pistol at a campus bagel store at UNC-Chapel Hill.
The man has been identified as Mickel Deonte Harris. The tragic incident occurred only a few weeks after the terrible shooting death of an assistant professor in a university lab.

Who is Mickel Deonte Harris?
Mickel Deonte Harris is 27 years old, and a resident of Durham. He was arrested at around 2:45 p.m. Due to outstanding warrants from a prior incident on September 5, Harris was brought into custody. The Chapel Hill Police Department has established Harris’ connection to the continuing disturbance that happened on the UNC campus on Wednesday in the late afternoon.
He was captured more than 30 minutes after UNC issued the all-clear for staff and students to continue their regular on-campus activities.

The university on Wednesday sent out an emergency alert about the presence of an armed or dangerous person on campus at around 1 p.m. A notification of the all-clear was given at around 2:10 p.m. Police officers were seen at the Greenfield Place Apartments on Formosa Lane after Harris was taken into custody.
As per a media report, the Alpine Bagel Cafe employee’s boyfriend entered the business and brandished a gun during a heated argument before leaving. However, as per reports, no shots nor injuries were reported during the incident. The UNC Student Union building had police officers stationed all around it as students sought safety for a little more than an hour.

UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz in a press conference while reacting to the incident said, “It’s sad and alarming that there have been two lockdowns over the past 16 days on our campus. We’ve had to apprehend individuals that have violated the safety of our community.”
