Richard Blumenthal is an American politician, lawyer and current senior United States senator for Connecticut since 2011. He is a registered Democrat and is up for re-election in the November 8, 2022 midterms. Him and Chris Murphy are currently Connecticut’s senators. 
Born on February 13, 1946, in Brooklyn New York to a Jewish immigrant family, Blumenthal attended Harvard College from 1963 to 1967, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree. After graduating he was selected for the Fiske Fellowship which allowed him to study at Cambridge for a year. Upon his return, Blumenthal attended the Yale Law School, graduating with his Juris Doctor degree in 1973.

His career in politics began in 1977, after being appointed the United States attorney for the District of Connecticut, a position he held on to until 1981. In 1984, he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives and served in the public office for three years before winning a special election in 1987 to become a representative in the Connecticut Senate. 

In 1990, he won his election bid for the Attorney General of Connecticut’s office. He would continue to be re-elected to the AG’s office in 1994,1998, 2002, and 2006. Such was his popularity that many in the Democratic Party considered him to be a top candidate for a gubernatorial run (running for Governor).

Throughout his career Blumenthal involved himself in investigating issues in Connecticut like sexual assault via MySpace contacts in 2006. Similarly, he had voiced his opposition to a proposal that telecommunications firms be provided immunity if they cooperate with the federal government’s terrorist surveillance programme in 2007. Blumenthal is also an avid supporter of fighting climate change and had even released a statement saying that disputing climate change helps no one and that “Dithering will be disastrous.”

He is one of the richest senators in the US Senate, with a net worth of $100 million. He has been married to his wife Cynthia Malin since 1982. His son, Matt Blumenthal was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives in 2018.
