Several people have expressed their condolences and prayers for the Carter family, especially for Rosalynn Carter, the former president’s wife. The Carters are the longest-married presidential couple in American history thanks to their marriage of more than 75 years.
Who is Rosalynn Carter?
Eleanor Rosalynn Carter is an American writer and activist who was the First Lady of the United States from 1977 to 1981 as President Jimmy Carter’s wife. She has consistently been a major advocate of various causes, including mental health.
Rosalynn was among the most politically aware and involved first ladies in American history, even attending Cabinet sessions. She served as her husband’s top advisor. Also, she functioned as an ambassador internationally, particularly in Latin America, and is recognized as a significant figure in the Habitat for Humanity foundation.
Rosalynn met Jimmy Carter, her best friend’s older brother, in Plains, Georgia, where she was raised. They got engaged and later married on July 7, 1946, while she was still a junior college student and he was still a naval cadet. Rosalynn continued her education while caring for her three sons, primarily through home-study courses in literature and the arts. Amy, their fourth child, was born in 1967.
