Judge Tanya Chutkan, a highly respected appointee of the Obama administration, has been appointed to handle Donald Trump’s January 6 indictment case.

Recently, as a result of Donald Trump’s efforts to rig the 2020 election, federal prosecutors have brought charges against him. The former president is currently facing a fresh criminal prosecution, which comes shortly after he was accused of keeping secret information about national defense.

Who is Tanya S Chutkan?

Tanya Sue Chutkan, a renowned jurist and attorney who was born in Jamaica on July 5, 1962, is from Washington, D.C. She has been employed since 2014 as a United States district judge in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Notably, she will preside over the criminal prosecution of former American president Donald J. Trump for the circumstances leading up to the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Chutkan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from George Washington University in 1983, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School awarded her a Juris Doctor in 1987. After completing her schooling, she started working as a lawyer from 1987 until 1990 at Hogan & Hartson LLP (now Hogan Lovells). She then worked from 1990 to 1991 at the law offices of Donovan, Leisure, Rogovin, Huge & Schiller.

She demonstrated her commitment to public service and criminal defense work while working as a trial lawyer and supervisor at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia from 1991 to 2002.

Peter A. Krauthamer, Tanya Sue Chutkan’s husband, served as a judge on the District of Columbia’s Superior Court from 2012 to 2023. The couple has two sons.

Tanya Sue Chutkan’s nomination as a judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia was announced by then-President Barack Obama on December 19, 2013. According to 104 Stat. 5089, the position for which she was nominated had been formed. On February 25, 2014, she went through a hearing before the US Senate Judiciary Committee.
