Israeli [sic] is a murderous, genocidal settler state, and Palestinians have every right to resist through armed struggle, solidarity. #FreePalestine.” This tweet, along with several others, has sparked outrage and concern.

Grewal’s Twitter activity includes statements such as, “No government on earth is as genocidal as this settler colonial state,” in response to a tweet from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She also retweeted posts that accused Israel of having “a mad bloodlust” and implied that those who support Israel would have supported slave owners during rebellions. Perhaps the most controversial of her retweets contained a news video detailing the Hamas attack, with the caption “It’s been such an extraordinary day!”

These statements and retweets have prompted a strong response from the Yale community, with over 1,240 signatures on a petition created by student Netanel Crispe, calling for the immediate removal of Zareena Grewal from the Yale Faculty.

In the petition, Crispe argues that freedom of speech, while essential, cannot be abused, especially when one holds a position of authority and power. He contends that speech promoting violence, murder, or terrorism should never be tolerated, and that Grewal’s statements and actions run contrary to the values of Yale University.

“Condoning violence, advocating for a terrorist organization, and historical revisionism and inaccuracies are all ideas that run contrary to the values of Yale University,” Crispe wrote in the petition. He further emphasizes that anyone with a moral compass should not stand for the promotion of violence from a professor at a respected academic institution.
