The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reported on Sunday morning that Brett Harris, a police officer who was badly hurt in a car crash on May 12, has passed away.

“With immense sadness and a heavy heart, I must report that the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has lost another deputy in a line of duty death,” Sheriff Chad Bianco said.

“Harris suffered major injuries as a result of the crash, including a catastrophic brain injury,” the sheriff added. “In a final act of Service Above Self, it was Deputy Harris’ wish to donate his organs so that others may live. The Harris family is currently working with the hospital to ensure his wishes are honored.”

Who was Brett Harris?

Brett Harris was the Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy officer.

Around 2:15 a.m. on Friday, Harris of the Hemet Sheriff’s Station suffered serious injuries in a collision with another car in San Jacinto at the intersection of Esplanade Avenue and State Street. Harris, 26, had severe wounds, including a fatal brain injury.

There are very few details on the collision itself, however, the Sheriff’s Office has stated that Harris had been responding to a call for backup when the collision took place. The driver of the second vehicle, a 56-year-old Hemet woman, was injured lightly, and a second officer was injured while attempting to extract Harris from the debris.

“Please continue to pray for Deputy Harris’s wife, mother and father, twin sister, brother, and the men and women of RSO as we navigate this process,” the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.
