A former Dallas Cowboys tight end and another climber died on Thursday after the two fell from a “significant height”, according to a report from NBC News, quoting officials.

Gavin Escobar (33) and Chelsea Walsh (31) died while rock climbing at Tahquitz Rock. The spot is a well-known destination for climbers as it is close to Los Angeles.

Their cause of death was not listed, with Riverside County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brandy Swan telling NBC that what happened had been a “complete accident.”

Escobar had played in the NFL, predominantly for the Dallas Cowboys before retiring from the game in 2017. He began working as a firefighter for the Long Beach Fire Department in California earlier this year.

Who was Chelsea Walsh?

Chelsea Walsh was an avid rock climber who died alongside Gavin Escobar on September 28.

Not much is known about her. She was born sometime in 1989 and attended Chapman University. Walsh’s family described her as an avid rock climber who had a passion for cinematography.

Both her and Escobar were found by the Riverside County Fire Department after a call went out on Wednesday reporting two injured climbers at the base of Tahquitz Rock. A report from Climbing magazine said that the two had been attached to a rope, but that one of them did not have a device used for climbing down.

In fact, before her untimely death, Walsh worked for a non-profit organisation called Road Trip Nation. According to the non-profit’s website, it enables young people to become empowered through various experiences like documentary making, podcasts and online courses.

According to a report from Climbing Magazine Walsh was a filmmaker who had recently worked on a documentary called Light, which was on rock climbers who were fighting to overcome their eating disorders.
