Author of famed children’s book ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ Eric Carle, who often described himself as a “picture writer”, died on Wednesday at the age of 91 due to kidney failure.

Carle, who was born in 1929 in the city of Syracuse in New York, moved to Germany at the age of six where he graduated from an art school in Stuttgart.

According to his biography, Carle returned to the United States in 1952 “with a fine portfolio in hand and forty dollars in his pocket, he arrived in New York”, reported AFP.

His most famous work, as a writer and illustrator, includes books like ‘The Very Busy Spider, ‘The Very Lonely Firefly’, ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and ‘The Grouchy Ladybug’. He wrote over 70 books throughout his career as a writer.

Carle was awarded multiple accolades, including Laura Ingalls Wilder Award in 2003, which is now known as the Children’s Literature Legacy Award.
