Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. Chief Financial Officer Gustavo Arnal died after he fell from a skyscraper in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood on Friday. Arnal, 52, was reportedly a resident of  Leonard Street.

A law enforcement source told CNN that Arnal jumped from the 18th-floor balcony of his high-rise apartment.

“I wish to extend our sincerest condolences to Gustavo’s family. Gustavo will be remembered by all he worked with for his leadership, talent and stewardship of our Company,” Harriet Edelman, Independent Chair of the Bed Bath & Beyond’s Board of Directors, said in a statement. “Our focus is on supporting his family and his team and our thoughts are with them during this sad and difficult time.”

According to a source, Arnal’s wife witnessed him jump off the balcony, CNN reported, adding that no suicide note was found. The New York Police Department said the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office was investigating the death.

Arnal was among the executives who provided details on Wednesday of the company’s turnaround plan. The plan included cutting 20% of jobs across its corporate and supply-chain operations. The company will be closing about 150 lower-producing stores. 

He joined the retailer in May 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He was previously with Avon Products Inc., Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. and Procter & Gamble Co.

In August, Arnal sold 55,013 shares in the company, according to Reuters’ calculations based on SEC filings showed.

Arnal had an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Universidad Simon Bolivar, and a master’s degree in Finance from the Universidad Metropolitana, according to the company’s website.

Before working for Bed Bath & Beyond Inc., he worked for Avon, a leading direct-selling beauty company where he helped lead a successful business turnaround effort.

Before joining Avon, Arnal was CFO, International Divisions and Global Functions at Walgreens Boots Alliance. He was a global leader, with experience leading teams across the US, EMEA, APAC and LATAM, according to Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. newsroom.

He has also previously served in senior positions at Procter & Gamble, including CFO of India, Middle East and Africa, CFO Global Fabric and Home Care, and CFO Global Personal Beauty.
