A shooting suspect was discovered dead inside the structure with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Tuesday, according to an assistant chief with the Columbia Police Department.

Jermaine M. Burnett, the suspect, was discovered dead after Boone County Sheriff’s deputies entered the structure, according to CPD Assistant Chief Jeremiah Hunter.

Hunter stated that an investigation will be done by the University of Missouri Police Department. He declared that it was safe for people to go back to their houses.

Residents are being allowed back into their apartments, an apartment complex resident told ABC 17 News.

Early in the day, police used gas to try to force the suspect in a shooting in South Columbia out of an apartment. After the suspect fired at them, they also retaliated, a police official said.

On Tuesday, police were attempting to make contact with Burnett, the suspect in the shooting death of a woman on Monday in a south Columbia neighborhood.

The shooting on Tayside Circle in the Highland neighborhood resulted in the death of Janet L. Jago, 72, the Columbia Police Department reported on Tuesday afternoon.  Staff had also blocked off the Forest Village apartment building on South Providence Road on Tuesday afternoon.

Jago was married to Art Jago, a retired professor from the University of Missouri who unsuccessfully ran for office in the Fifth Ward of the Columbia City Council.

In a different case on Tuesday, charges were brought against Burnett. According to Casenet, he was charged with two counts of second-degree domestic assault and second-degree property damage as a result of an alleged incident on Friday.

In April, he was also accused of resisting arrest as well as first-degree property damage and tampering with a motor vehicle. A motion to revoke bond was submitted in that case on Tuesday.
