The deadly accident on Friday that claimed the life of a Rutland City Police Department officer is still under investigation. Jessica Ebbighausen, a 19-year-old officer, has been confirmed as the victim. She joined the Rutland Police Department on May 23 as a part-time, level 2-certified officer.
Tate Rheaume, 20, was reported as trying to break into a house on East Washington Street at about 2:35 p.m., according to police. Police from Rutland responded. They claimed that as Rheaume fled the site, an officer followed it.

The pursuit continued from East Washington Street to the intersection with Woodstock Avenue, also known as U.S. Route 4. More police cars also arrived in the area at the same moment to offer assistance. Ebbighausen was operating one of the cruisers while a full-time supervisory cop sat in the backseat.
Rheaume is thought to have crossed the center line into the eastbound lanes during the two-mile pursuit and slammed into Officer Ebbighausen’s vehicle. He also struck a different Rutland police car. No one from the pursuing cruiser was hurt in the collision.
Officer Ebbighausen died at the scene. Her body was transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy while being escorted by the Vermont State Police and the Rutland Police Department.

Rheaume and the other two Rutland policemen suffered injuries in the collision. All three were transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center. The policeman who was riding along with Officer Ebbighausen is currently being treated for his injuries. After receiving treatment, the officer who was operating the second eastbound cruiser was released. Rheaume was moved to Burlington’s University of Vermont Medical Center. It is believed that their wounds are not life-threatening.
Officer Ebbighausen had aspired to be a police officer since she was nine years old, according to the police chief of Rutland City. Later this year, she was scheduled to enroll in the police academy.
