In the Gilgo Beach murders, which attracted national attention and stumped Long Island, New York, police for more than ten years, a suspect has been taken into custody, according to a law enforcement officer and two government officials who made the announcement on Friday.
The inquiry is being handled by the Suffolk County police and district attorney. There has been a “significant development in the case,” according to a spokesperson for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, who declined to elaborate until after a court hearing later this morning.

The case involves a series of unsolved murders and disappearances of individuals, mostly sex workers, whose remains were found in the vicinity of Gilgo Beach and the surrounding areas.
