Marion Barber III, former Dallas Cowboys running back, has died at the age of 38. 

“We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III. Marion was an old school, hard-nosed football player who ran with the will to win every down. He had a passion for the game and love for his coaches and teammates. Our hearts go out to Marion’s family and friends during this difficult time,” the team said in a statement.

Barber, who would have turned a year older on June 10, was reportedly found dead in his apartment on Wednesday by cops wh were there for a welfare check. The cause of death is not yet known at the moment. 

“Officers are currently out on a welfare concern, but we are unable to provide any further information at this time,” a Frisco Police spokesperson told the Star-Telegram.

Who was Marion Barber III?

Dallas Cowboys drafted Marion Barber III in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft. Barber spent six years with the Cowboys from 2005-2010 before spending a year Chicago Bears in 2011. 

Owing to his hard-hitting, punishing style of running, Barber earned the nickname “Marion the Barbarian.

He had 4,780 rushing yards and 53 rushing touchdowns during his career, as well as 1,330 receiving yards and six receiving scores.

Following his retirement, Barber faced several legal troubles. he was arrested a couple of times. He was detained and taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation in 2014. In 2019, he was taken into custody on two misdemeanor criminal mischief charges.
