The name of Deputy Matthew Eugene Yates, a Clark County officer murdered in the line of duty on July 24, 2022, will be read aloud at the National Police Week candlelight vigil in Washington, D.C.

Who was Matthew Yates?

Deputy Sheriff Matthew Yates died of a gunshot wound while responding to a report of gunfire in the 1100 block of Ashwood Drive in South Charleston. He died at the age of 41.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office got a 911 call at 10:51 a.m. indicating that a female person had broken into a home and fired five or six rounds. Deputy Yates and another deputy were confronted with gunshots when they attempted to search the mobile home. During the standoff with the subject, Deputy Yates was shot inside the trailer and was stuck inside for hours. Clark County Special Operations and other tactical units were dispatched to his aid.

Deputy Yates was airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital, where he died from his injuries. A second deputy was hurt while fleeing the shooting.

Deputy Yates has worked for the Clark County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years. He is survived by his wife, daughter, two stepsons, and father, a former sheriff from Clark County.

Yates’s name was added Ohio’s Peace Officer Memorial on May 5, 2023. Names of other five officers were also added.

As Deputy Yates’ name was inscribed in stone to honor his public service, sacrifice, and legacy, News Center 7’s John Bedell was there with Deputy Yates’ father, Eugene Yates, and his widow, Tracy Yates.

Additionally, the memorial wall now has seven historical additions, including the names of six Dayton police officers: Troy E. Sine, Clement L. Francis, Emerson Glotfelter, Vinton E. Harsh, Edward M. Hennessey, and Lawrence R. Graham. Six policemen passed away between 1918 and 1920 as a result of the Spanish flu they caught while on the job.
