A deadly shooting over the weekend was the result of an argument over seating at a New Mexico movie theatre showing Jennifer Lawrence’s most recent film, ‘No Hard Feelings’. Michael Tenorio, the victim, was shot and killed on Sunday inside the Century Rio Theatre in Albuquerque.

According to witnesses on the site, the gunfire started soon after the previews and caused audience members to rush for the nearest emergency escape.

Who was Michael Tenorio?

Michael Tenorio was a 52-year-old man who had visited a New Mexico theatre with his wife Trina for an 8:50 showing of the Lawrence-led rom-com. He was shot and killed by a 19-year-old teenager identified as Enrique Padilla.

A criminal complaint claims that Michael and his wife Trina Tenorio bought two tickets for Row F, Seats 8 and 11, in the hopes that the people in the seats next to them would let them sit together. According to the Albuquerque News Journal, when they arrived at the theatre, a staff member gave them the go-ahead to take a pair of side-by-side seats and to explain the situation to their fellow moviegoers.

Police have now been informed by witnesses that a young guy later identified as Padilla entered the theatre with his girlfriend to see the film. At least one of his seats, though, was taken by the Tenorios. Despite attempts to reason with Padilla by the theatre staff, Padilla had no intention of changing his mind.

Padilla got up and threw a bucket of popcorn at Trina as the situation got worse. After Michael shoved Padilla, the youngster pulled a gun and opened fire, according to police, who were called to the scene. Tenorio received emergency care from a police officer who was at the movie but was not on duty. Tenorio was later declared dead, but his wife was unhurt.

According to authorities, Padilla fled the scene immediately, while his girlfriend fought with Trina before fleeing as well. Later, authorities discovered Padilla cowering behind an emergency exit with apparent gunshot wounds. They also discovered a gun outside that matched spent bullet casings from the shooting.

A criminal complaint and arrest warrant against Padilla listed open counts of homicide, shooting at an occupied building, and tampering with evidence.
