A boating accident in South Carolina claimed the life of 11-year-old Olivia Knighton, the daughter of Brad Knighton, the famed former MLS goalkeeper, on Wednesday.

Olivia Knighton died at McLeod Seacoast Hospital after the incident on the Intracoastal Waterway close to Little River. Olivia was one of nine people who were swept overboard when their boat was smacked by a big wake from another passing vessel, according to officials from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

Olivia Knighton was 11 years old. She was the daughter of former MLS goalkeeper Brad Knighton and his wife Britney. She has two siblings Owen and Brooks.

The passing of Olivia Knighton, a beloved fifth-grade student at Robert Coelho Middle School, has left the Attleboro community in deep sorrow.

The 11-year-old met a horrible end, according to authorities, when she was struck by the boat’s propeller during the event. There were twelve persons aboard the 23-foot boat at the time of the sad incident. No other injuries were reported.

After the tragic loss, Brad Knighton in a statement said, “There are no words to express the depth of our profound grief and sorrow in this moment. Our family is still in shock at the sudden and tragic loss of our beautiful and brilliant daughter, Olivia, to an unfortunate boating accident yesterday. We are all still in disbelief that her bright and pure light was taken away from us so suddenly. Somehow, we will get through this together as a family.”

The New England Revolution also shared a statement after the incident, “The entire New England Revolution community is devastated to learn of the Knighton family’s tragic loss. Olivia was a bright and shining light who was a beloved presence around the Revolution throughout her entire life, always bringing a warm smile and laugh to Gillette Stadium and our training facility when she would visit. Her sudden loss leaves a profound hole in our hearts.”
