Competitive eater and popular radio personality Patrick Philbin, commonly referred to as Pat, died on November 29, 2022, at the age of 59. Former host of The Opie & Anthony Show, Anthony Cumia broke the news on Monday night about the death of his colleague, saying that Philbin, who frequently appeared on the show, was an all-around good guy.

The reason for his death has not been disclosed to the public, although Pat earlier posted on his Twitter that he was undergoing hydrotherapy, because of which one of his legs was amputated. 

A GoFundMe was started by him to raise money for all the medical expenses. They raised over $20k. 

Who was Patrick Philbin? 

Patrick Philbin was a competitive eater who made several appearances on Opie & Anthony. He initially made an appearance on the show in 1985, and continued to feature on it till 2014. He attained mass popularity when he took the challenge of taking 75 shots of a beverage.

Philbin later went on to participate in a hot dog eating contest hosted by Nathan’s Famous. He secured the second position in the contest, by setting the record of finishing 26 hot dogs in ten minutes. In fact, in an interview with NJ.com, he revealed that he used to make hot dogs when he first started cooking. 

Despite the online popularity he had amassed, he remained inactive on Instagram, with only four posts and some eight hundred followers. He was active on Twitter, where he posted about his ongoing medical treatments. 

Tributes have poured in for Philbin, with many of his colleagues sharing their memories of their late friend. 

“Very sorry to hear the passing of the great Pat From Moonachie. A very funny person and kind soul. I hope he’s baby-birding St. Peter as we speak,” Davey Mac, a radio host who was friends with Philbin, tweeted.
