A South Dakota woman’s elaborate fabrication of a rape incident has sent shockwaves through communities, highlighting the repercussions of deceit and the depths some may go to cover their actions. Renee Dawn Skoglund, 30, found herself entangled in a web of lies after pleading guilty to making a false police report, admitting that she concocted an assault story in the aftermath of her own infidelity.

Renee Dawn Skoglund is a 30-year-old woman from South Dakota. Skoglund’s story began to unravel on March 10 when she was arrested in Sioux Falls for falsely reporting a sexual battery incident in Hillsborough County, Florida, two days prior. The severity of the charges against her included misuse of the 911 system, false reporting of a crime, and fabricating physical evidence.
In the 911 audio released by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Skoglund detailed a harrowing account of being assaulted. She claimed to have pulled over on I-75 due to car trouble, recounting how a male assailant placed a towel over her head, forcibly entered the vehicle, and sexually assaulted her while her arms and legs were bound.

Skoglund went so far as to describe a specific type of rope used in the assault. Authorities, following her lead, traced the product back to Walmart stores in the vicinity. Surveillance footage from these stores eventually revealed Skoglund purchasing the rope herself.
The extensive investigation took a shocking twist when evidence showed Skoglund’s initial statements to be false. Subsequent video footage from various locations where Skoglund had been refuted her claims, leading her to finally admit to fabricating the entire incident.
As details of the case unfolded, the motivations behind Skoglund’s false report came to light. At the time of the incident, Skoglund was married. Her fabricated story of sexual assault served as a diversion, concealing her infidelity and illicit activities from her husband.
Prosecutor Jessica Couvertier revealed that Skoglund’s guilt over her extramarital affair prompted her to seek a free STD test. In an attempt to absolve herself of her actions, she resorted to creating a narrative that not only deflected attention but also took advantage of emergency resources meant for genuine victims.
Renee Dawn Skoglund’s actions have left lasting repercussions for both her and the justice system. In light of her guilty plea, she has been sentenced to two years of community control, a form of house arrest, followed by eight years of probation. Additionally, she owes the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office a staggering $17,245.26 for the extensive resources expended during the investigation.
Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed his disappointment at the incident, recognizing the damage such fabrications can cause to genuine victims who rely on emergency resources.
