Sgt Bobby Swartz, Oklahoma sheriff’s deputy, was killed near Pennsylvania Avenue on Monday. He and another deputy were serving eviction papers when a man shot at them. The suspect later surrendered at the entrace of the Tinker Air Force Base, officials said.

“Please keep the family of Sgt. Bobby Swartz in your prayers. Bobby was killed this afternoon serving lockout paperwork,” Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook

The deputies were serving papers at a home on Southwest 78th Street near Pennsylvania Avenue at around 1:30 PM (local time). As per Tommie Johnson III, they made contact with the suspect at the front door.

The suspect shot at the first deputy. The second deputy was trying to get the first to safety when authorities said the suspect shot him. Both were rushed to the hospital, where Swartz was declared dead. 

  “Today, the Oklahoma County Sheriffs Office mourns the loss of a good man. Two of our deputies were shot while serving a lock out order. One deputy succumbed to his injuries; the other is in stable condition. We plan to release more details soon. Until then please keep us in your prayers,” the department said.

Many people gathered outside the OU Health as the body of Sgt. Bobby Swartz was loaded into a vehicle to be transported to the Medical Examiner. The deputy was draped in an American Flag as numerous law enforcement officers from across the state saluted him. 

“It’s a sad day for the Oklahoma County sheriff’s office. Law enforcement, it’s a tight community, and I’m so thankful they were screaming across the state for my guys,” Sheriff Johnson said.

In a Facebook video from 2018, Swartz said that he joined the sheriff’s office in December 1997. He added that he joined to help people. 

“Before that I was in the Army Reserves,” he said. 

The wounded deputy was not immediately identified and was described as being in ‘stable condition’.
