American singer-songwriter Britney Spears will address a Los Angeles court on Wednesday in an ongoing battle over her conservatorship against her father.

What is a conservatorship?

The United States puts in place a legal arrangement that causes the appointment of a guardian or a protector by a court to manage the financial affairs and/or daily life of another person due to old age or physical or mental limitations. A conservatorship is put in place with the aim of protecting those who cannot take care of themselves.

Why does Britney Spears have a conservator?

Spears suffered a mental breakdown in 2007. Paparazzi captured her attacking a car with an umbrella and shaving her head.

After being declared as a person with severely diminished mental capacity a guardian – her father – was made her conservator.

In April 2021, Samuel Ingham III – Spears’ court-appointed attorney – in a Los Angeles probate court hearing said that the pop star had agreed with Judge Brenda Penny on a June 23 date, the Associated Press reported. Wednesday’s hearing will be the first since May 10, 2019, to see Britney Spears speak in court.
