Clarence Thomas, an Associate Justice at the US Supreme Court, is also an adjunct professor at George Washington University. Thousands of students have recently started demanding his termination.

The teaching position at George Washington University, which is popular for liberal arts and international studies, is a side gig for Clearance Thomas. He teaches constitutional law at the institute. Thomas has been a Supreme Court Justice since 1991.

Students at George Washington University have drafted a petition that demands Thomas’ termination. The reasons for this demand are multifold. These include his concurring opinion on overturning Roe v. Wade, a possible review of America’s laws on same-sex marriage and contraception. Ginni Thomas, Clarence’s wife, has also been linked to the ongoing January 6 riots investigation.

The petition has already received more than 7,000 signatures. However, the school’s authorities have decided to not terminate Justice Clarence Thomas, according to reports from CNN.

The petition reads, “Judge Thomas is actively making life unsafe for thousands of students on our campus (not to mention thousands of campuses across the country).”

The University responded in a campus-wide email on Tuesday, which was reportedly sent by GW Law Dean Dayna Bowen Matthew. “Justice Thomas has been a consistent critic of the Court’s legal philosophy on substantive due process for many years”, the email obtained by CNN read.

“Because we steadfastly support the robust exchange of ideas and deliberation, and because debate is an essential part of our university’s academic and educational mission to train future leaders who are prepared to address the world’s most urgent problems, the university will neither terminate Justice Thomas’ employment nor cancel his class in response to his legal opinions,” the email added.

The US Supreme Court currently has a conservative supermajority. Six out of nine Justices on the panel identify themselves as conservatives. Three of these conservative judges were appointed by former US President Donald Trump, a Republican.
