Every year in May, people around the world recognize Mental Health Awareness Month. This month-long observance aims to raise awareness about the importance of mental health, increase understanding of mental illness, and combat the stigma that still surrounds it. The initiative began in the United States in 1949, led by Mental Health America, the country’s leading community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness.

The focus of Mental Health Awareness Month is to encourage people to prioritize their mental health and seek help when needed. It serves as an opportunity to educate people on mental health and mental illness and reduce the stigma that often prevents individuals from seeking support.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, individuals, organizations, and mental health professionals work together to provide resources, support, and advocacy. Mental Health America sets a theme for the month each year to help guide activities and raise awareness. In 2021, the theme was “Tools 2 Thrive,” and in 2022 it was “Strength in Community.” These themes focus on giving people the tools they need to improve their mental health and emphasizing the importance of community support.

The timing of Mental Health Awareness Month in May is significant because it follows Mental Health Month in the UK, which takes place in April. Additionally, May 1st marks the start of National Mental Health Month in Canada, making it a time for the entire North American continent to prioritize mental health awareness.
