A massive vehicle pile-up involving more than 100 vehicles has led to the closure of Interstate 94 (hereafter, I-94) in the state of Wisconsin. According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, I-94 is now closed from Osseo to Northfield, with traffic backed up for miles due to multiple crashes that resulted in fires breaking out.

While there are conflicting reports at the moment, at least five and up to 20 tractor-trailer trucks were involved in separate crashes between Osseo and Northfield on Thursday morning, and videos have surfaced on social media showing multiple trucks on fire.

The reason for the pile-up is hazardous weather, as the Wisconsin State Patrol has stated that freezing rain shortly before 6am on Thursday led to hazardous road conditions, causing vehicles to crash or run-off the slippery, ice-covered highway. According to local Wisconsin newspaper, The Journal Times, a tractor-trailer truck apparently slid on the icy road and onto the median strip near Hixton at around 5.45am and went over two cars, leading to a fire. The other crashes and run-offs reportedly occurred near the truck.

As per the Professional Firefighters of Wisconsin, there are an estimated 150 vehicles involved in the pile-up, with several vehicles being trapped under tractor-trailer trucks. However, it is difficult to put a number on the vehicles involved in the crash, and emergency responders have reportedly said that there are “too many vehicles to count.”

As it stands, several helicopters have been requested to aid in rescue efforts, and the Wisconsin State Patrol has advised people who would be driving the route to stay indoors, if possible. While traffic is being diverted from the Osseo and Northfield exits, the State Patrol has advised commuters to avoid the area nonetheless as road conditions in and around the area remain hazardous. As of now, no injuries have been reported officially, and authorities have yet to give an indication of when the highway will reopen.
