Manchester City defender Ruben Dias was named the Premier League Player of the Season on Saturday, becoming the second Portuguese, after former Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo to receive the honour. He is also only the fourth defender to be named Premier League Player of the season, after Nemanja Vidic, Vincent Kompany and Virgil van Dijk.  

The 24-year-old beat seven other nominees to the award, in Kevin de BruyneBruno Fernandes, Jack Grealish, Harry KaneMason MountMohamed Salah and Tomas Soucek.

Last month, Dias was also voted as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year. Dias has played an important role in City's campaign, helping them win the Premier League and EFL Cup and reach the UEFA Champions League final in a spectacular debut season in English football.

A towering six-footer, Dias came through the Benfica youth system.He was also voted as the Primeira Liga's best young player of the year in the 2017-18 season.

Dias has also been named as Manchester City's Player of the Year and was praised as being a key factor in Manchester City regaining the Premier League title this year by bringing composure, leadership and stability back to the defence.

On November 17, Dias scored his first international goals during the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League, netting a brace in a 3–2 victory against Croatia.
