We all talk about mental health and its
importance, especially in times of pandemic, but few of us actually do anything
to manage or improve it on a daily basis. Mental health, according to the World
Health Organization
, is “a condition of well-being in which an individual
recognises his or her own abilities, can manage with typical life challenges,
can work productively, and can contribute to his or her community.”

Workplace stress, bereavement,
separation, and financial difficulties are all factors that can lead to poor
mental health. According to studies released by the American Psychological
Association, mental health difficulties in children and adolescents have
increased dramatically, potentially due to the proliferation of electronic
communication and digital media.

There are a variety of ways that can
be used on a daily basis to reduce stress and promote mental health.
Exercising, getting enough sleep (8 hours), eating healthily, meditating, and
talking to a friend on a regular basis are all good strategies to look after
your mental health.

Genes or brain chemistry, trauma, and
even a family history of mental health problems all play a role in mental
health.

“Some early warning signs of poor
mental health are low energy, eating or sleeping too much or too little, not
participating in activities, abusing alcohol or drugs, mood swings, panic
attacks, shivers and more. Anything extreme and out of the ordinary can help
you identify poor mental health,” says Dhruv Patel, mental health expert
and founder Ruhgu.

Patel also suggests 10 simple ways
to take care of your mental well-being.

Keep a track of the good things

Keeping a gratitude journal might assist
you in reinforcing the positive aspects of your life. You can go back and
remember them when you’re feeling down. Every day, make a list of three things
for which you are grateful.

Exercise

When you workout, endorphins are
released, making you feel wonderful. Additionally, when you look beautiful, you
feel good and get a boost in self-esteem.

Maintain a healthy diet

Your nutrition, when combined with
exercise, can help you feel better. A simple pick-me-up might be as simple as
eating fruits and vegetables and drinking plenty of water.

Meditate

Take a few minutes at the start and end
of each day to calm your thoughts and think about nothing in particular. You
can deal with your thoughts one at a time by leaving them at the door.

Sleep

Sleep deprivation is linked to sadness
and poor decision-making.

Talk to your friends and family

If you’re having trouble with something,
don’t be scared to tell someone you care about. Seek support and advice from
friends or family members.

Invest in your hobby

There’s a good chance you have something
you want to accomplish but never do. So, indulge in your favourite pastime,
whether it’s reading, art, athletics, or even the crossword puzzle. Even if
you’re not very good at it, your pastime might help you feel better about
yourself.

Make an effort to help others

When you do something for someone else
without expecting anything in return, whether it’s helping around the house or
cooking a dinner for your family, their gratitude can make you feel like you’re
on top of the world.

Listen to calming music

Listening to calming sounds like natural
noises, instrumental music, and peaceful chants has been shown to lower tension
and anxiety while also changing your mood.

Ask for help

If everything else fails and you’re
having trouble managing your mental health, seek help from a professional. You
are not alone, so don’t be afraid.
