Flash flood caused by heavy rains in an illegal underground textile workshop in a private house in Morocco killed at least 24 textile workers, state’s news agency MAP reported.

Rescue workers managed to rescue 10 workers from the affected site and they were rushed to the hospital.

Several victims are feared of being electrocuted as the local media indicated that the incoming water interfered with power facilities.

However, there  was no immediate confirmation of these reports.

The country has experienced heavy rains in recent weeks as well after a long period of drought.

The beginning of the year was marked by heavy rainfall across Morocco when Casablanca was one of the worst affected regions, with floods causing significant infrastructural damage to the city.  

The floods wreaked havoc in the region causing buildings to collapse in Casablanca with at least four deaths reported, according to local media.

However, there is no absolute clarity on the reason, poorly maintained drainage systems is often considered the cause of  exacerbate flooding in cities.

Search operations are underway in the region.
