Having scored 166 for the loss of two on the opening, rain-marred, day of the third Test in Sydney, Australia will be hoping to build a commanding first innings total and put the visitors under pressure. Fifties from debutant Will Pucovski and Marnus Labuschagne and an ominously confident showing from Steve Smith helped put the hosts on top on the opening day. Mohammed Siraj started the innings brightly, dismissing David Warner in the fourth over of the match before rains halted play for nearly four hours. Pucovski and Labuschagne added 100 runs for the second wicket before debutant Navdeep Saini accounted for Pucovski’s dismissal to open his wicket-taking account in Test cricket. Smith and Labuschagne looked in fine fettle as they added 60 runs for the third wicket to guide the hosts to a strong position at the end of the day’s play.
