A 7.4 earthquake struck the Polynesian country Tonga on Wednesday. The quake took place in Hihifo, Niuas, Tonga, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake struck at a depth of 212 km (132 miles) and the epicenter was at a distance of 73 km northwest of Hihifo, Tonga, the USGS said.
The US Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami warning after the earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Hihifo located 95 km from the epicenter.
