The
World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom on Monday said that a
vaccine alone would not be enough to combat the pandemic and will act only as a complementary
agent.

“A
vaccine will complement the other tools we have, not replace them. A vaccine on
its own will not end the pandemic, Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tweeted.

He
also warned that despite the administration of a vaccine, once it is found,
COVID-19 norms would have to stay in place to prevent situation from worsening.

Discussing
on the most crucial aspect of drug distribution Tedros added that supplies of
the vaccine would be carried out in a confined manner at first.

“Vaccine
will initially be restricted with health workers, older people and other
at-risk populations (to) be prioritized. That will hopefully reduce the number
of deaths and enable the health systems to cope.” He said.

The
statement comes in the backdrop of the latest developments around the COVID-19
vaccines by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer to salvage the pandemic raging
since months, with infections soaring past 54 million and claiming more than
1.3 million lives.

The
WHO’s figures for Saturday recorded 660,905 coronavirus cases setting a new high water mark.
