The Dubai-Kozhikode Air India Express plane that skidded on landing at Karipur airport on Friday, breaking into two, was at full speed while landing and overshot the runway, reports ANI quoting the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

According to a commercial flight tracking website, Flightradar24, the plane with 190 people onboard attempted landing twice at the tabletop runway.

Reports said the plane skidded on the wet runway and nosedived 35-feet into a gorge breaking into several pieces. The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the flight — IX 1344 — continued running to the end of the runway amid heavy rain and “fell down in the valley and broke down in two pieces”.

There were 174 passengers, 10 infants, two pilots and four cabin crew on board the aircraft, the ministry noted.

Television images showed the plane broken into two and fire-fighting teams using water canons to prevent the badly damaged fuselage from catching fire. Debris could be seen all over the accident site.
