Tree of Life Cross
Answer: Saint George’s Cross
The new navy ensign was unveiled by Narendra Modi, the prime minister of the nation. A naval ensign is carried by vessels to show nationality and the Indian naval ensign had a previous UK connection – St George’s Cross. This is a red cross against a white background and was initially added by Britishers when India was under their rule.
The cross was removed from the ensign when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was PM but the Sonia Gandhi-led UPA government reintroduced it.
The current ensign includes the Indian flag on the upper canton, a blue octagonal shape on top of an anchor, along with the national emblem, and the navy’s motto is superimposed on the shield.
While showcasing the new ensign, the navy said “The octagonal shape with twin golden borders draws inspiration from the seal of the great Indian emperor, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, whose visionary maritime outlook established a credible naval fleet”, adding that the Marathi chief’s fleet consisted of “60 fighting ships and approximately 5,000 men. The rising Maratha naval power during Shivaji Maharaj’s period was the first to secure the coastline against external aggression”.
PM Modi continued, saying, “Till today the Indian naval flags carried a sign of slavery, which has been replaced with a new one inspired by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj”.
