Ek Villain Returns, starring John Abraham and Arjun Kapoor, is a 2022 Hindi psychological action thriller film, which is directed by Mohit Suri. The film is the successor of a 2014 film named Ek Villain, which received widespread acclaim from all over India.
Apart from John Abraham and Arjun Kapoor, the film also has popular actors Disha Patani and Tara Sutaria. It was produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar for Balaji Motion Pictures and T-Series. The movie was released on July 29, 2022, in India.
The film has five musical numbers — Galliyan Returns, Dil, Shaamat, Naa Tere Bin and Dil (Shreya’s edition).
In the first week since its release, Ek Villain Returns earned more than 23 crores at the Indian box office. The film earned 7.05 crores on its opening day in India. As for the overseas release, it has since then earned 45.53 crores till August 4, 2022.
The shooting for the film began on March 1, 2021, while the wrapping up was finished on March 24, 2022. An interesting fact about the film is, that it was Aditya Roy Kapoor, who had signed originally for the role of Gautam, played by Arjun Kapoor. However, the 36-year-old actor had a falling out with director Mohit Suri, following which he backed out from doing the film citing differences in the creative parts.
The film begins with an intruder breaking into an apartment, before killing a singer named Aarvi Malhotra. Following an investigation, the police conclude that the crime was committed by the singer’s former lover Gautam Mehra, whose character was portrayed by Arjun Kapoor.
However, the film failed to replicate the success of the 2014 film Ek Villain, as it has since received mixed reviews from the critics and the viewers. Critics for the Bollywood Hungama, India Today, and The Free Press Journal have given the film at least 3 out of 5 stars. However, The Times of India, Scroll.in, Pinkvilla, News18 and The Indian Express have rated the film with a maximum of 2.5 stars, the lowest of which was only 1 star.
