Answer: Led Zeppelin

A new species of terrestrial frog has been found in the foggy highlands of Ecuador’s Andes, and it has been named after the pioneering British rock band Led Zeppelin.

The scientists David Brito-Zapata and Carolina Reyes-Puig discovered Pristimantis ledzeppelin, also known as Led Zeppelin’s Rain Frog, in the Cordillera del Cóndor, which crosses south-east Ecuador and north-east Peru.

The tiny frog, which has coppery-red eyes and mottled yellow, brown, black, and orange skin, belongs to the Pristimantis genus, which is large and quickly growing. There are 569 species in the genus, with 28 of them being discovered in Ecuador in the last two years.

The new discovery was published in the Neotropical Biodiversity journal and on the National Biodiversity Institute of Ecuador’s website.

All of the individuals were discovered “on shrub vegetation bordering streams inside mature forest, where they sat on bush leaves,” between 1.7 and 3 metres above the water, according to Brito-Zapata and Reyes-Puig. Males of the species reach a length of around 2.4cm, whereas one mature female measured 3.6cm from snout to vent.
