Amazon Quiz:  As of 2021, on which planet is ‘Percy’ collecting rock samples containing possible signs of bygone microscopic life?

Options:

1. Mercury

2. Jupiter

3. Saturn

4. Mars

Answer: Mars

Mars is the fourth planet in the solar system in terms of distance from the Sun, and the seventh planet in terms of size and mass. It is a reddish object that appears in the night sky on a regular basis.

Mars, often known as the Red Planet, has long been linked with violence and bloodshed. It was given the name of the Roman god of battle. Babylonian astronomer-astrologers named the planet Nergal after their deity of death and plague, who lived almost 3,000 years ago. Phobos (Greek: “Fear”) and Deimos (“Terror”), the planet’s two moons, were named after two of Ares and Aphrodite’s sons (the counterparts of Mars and Venus, respectively, in Greek mythology).

Mars has recently piqued people’s interest for reasons other than its ominous look. The planet is the second closest to Earth after Venus, and because its orbit is outside of Earth’s, it is typically easy to spot in the night sky. It’s also the only planet with a solid surface and atmospheric phenomena visible from Earth through telescopes.

Centuries of meticulous observations by earthbound observers, supplemented since the 1960s by satellite observations, have revealed that Mars is comparable to Earth in many respects. Clouds, winds, a roughly 24-hour day, seasonal weather patterns, polar ice caps, volcanoes, canyons, and other recognisable characteristics exist on Mars, just as they do on Earth.
