The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, was Queen Elizabeth II‘s husband. As a result, Charles was the British monarch’s consort from the day Elizabeth became queen on February 6, 1952, until his passing in 2021, making him the longest-serving royal consort in history.

Philip passed the record for the most years as a British royal consort in April 2009. In February 2013, he became the oldest male British royal ever, and in April 2019, he passed Princess Alice, the Duchess of Gloucester, and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother as the third-longest-living member of the British royal family.

He expressed in a 2000 interview (when he was 79) that he could not “imagine anything worse” and had “no ambition whatsoever” to become a centenarian, stating “parts of me are coming off already,” that he personally was not enthusiastic about living a very long life.
