Novak Djokovic, currently the world’s number one in men’s tennis, was detailed at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport in January 2022 after he tried to enter the country without taking the COVID-19 vaccine.

A known anti-vaxxer, Djokovic had applied for and received an exemption from Australian authorities over vaccination requirements, but the Australian government overturned the exemption given to the Serbian after public outrage at his entry and after authorities found that Djokovic had been dishonest in his travel documents.

While Djokovic challenged the Australian government’s decision to deport him twice, winning the first of these legal challenges, the Serb was eventually denied a visa on January 16 and then deported, thereby preventing his participation in the 2022 Australian Open.
