Neeraj Chopra scripted history at the 2022 IAAF World Championships when he won a silver medal in javelin with a throw of 88.13 metres on July 22. It was the second medal for an Indian athlete at the World Championships since Anju Bobby George, who won it two decades earlier in the 2003 edition in long jump, which was held in Paris.
Anju Bobby George is considered as one of the best track and field athletes to come out of India. When she took part in the Paris edition of the World Championships, she was already nursing an injury and was low in confidence. However, her husband cum coach at that time, Robert, decided to take her on a vacation in Paris, with Anju being in the dark that she was participating in the World Championships.
A few days later, when Anju came to know that she was participating in the event, she had recovered marginally from her injury, however, her confidence had been replenished. She began her campaign at the World Championships with a 6.61 metres jump in the first attempt. However, her performance suddenly went downhill from there.
Two fouls committed by Anju Bobby George in the subsequent jumps dragged her down in the rankings. At this moment, Jade Johnson of Great Britain, who was Anju Bobby George’s closest opponent, also overtook her with a jump of 6.63 metres. But Anju made a memorable comeback with a 6.70 metres jump after that, which helped her to climb to the third spot in the rankings and win the bronze medal.
She became the first-ever Indian to win a medal at the World Championships. Anju Bobby George was also the only Indian athlete to win a medal at the tournament for 19 years, till Neeraj Chopra equalled her record and became the second Indian athlete to win a medal at the World Championships.
