Amazon Quiz (August 19, 2022): In the recently released ‘Darlings’, which of these actresses plays the role of Shamshu Ansari?

Options:

Shefali Shah

Vidya Balan

Shabana Azmi

Nandita Das

Answer: Shefali Shah

Shefali Shah plays the role of Shamshu Ansari in Darlings. She stars opposite Alia Bhatt, who plays the role of a woman in an abusive relationship. Vijay Varma also outshines as the abusive husband who mistreats Bhatt’s character.

Ansari continues to recommend that her daughter break off the marriage and get rid of her violent husband, but Bhatt’s character keeps giving him chances. The film takes viewers down a wonderfully crafted path of black comedy as Bhatt’s character turns the table on Varma’s and takes him captive, deciding to inflict the same punishment he did on her.

Amid the botched kidnapping and even poorer cover-ups, there is a hint of seriousness because we know Bhatt’s character has lost her child because her husband pushed her down the stairs. As the mother-daughter duo decide what to do with the captive and how to get rid of the body, they become suspects in a police investigation and even manage to lose their prisoner at one point. The two are assisted by a writer in their comic but well-intentioned escapade, and it later turns out the helpful sidekick has a crush on Shah’s character.

The story becomes a tale of forgiveness as well when viewers learn Shah’s Ansari also survived an abusive relationship by killing her husband and eventually raising her daughter by herself. Bhatt’s character, however, breaks the cycle, deciding to turn her back on the no-good man, who ironically gets hit by a train while making his case for his wife to take him back.
