The name pizza was first mentioned in a Latin text from the Southern Italian town of Gaeta in Lazio, near the border with Campania, in the 10th century. The contemporary pizza originated in Naples, and the dish and its variations have since spread around the world.
It has become one of the world’s most popular foods and a popular fast food item in Europe, North America, and Australasia; it is offered at pizzerias (restaurants specialising in pizza), restaurants offering Mediterranean cuisine, via pizza delivery, and as street food. Various food firms produce ready-baked pizzas, which can be frozen and reheated in a home oven.
The global pizza market was worth $128 billion in 2017, and the US market was worth $44 billion, split among 76,000 pizzerias. On any given day, 13% of the U.S. population aged 2 years and up consumed pizza.
The Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana is a non-profit organisation based in Naples that was created in 1984 to promote genuine Neapolitan pizza. Neapolitan pizza was certified with the European Union as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed dish in 2009, at Italy’s request, and the art of cooking it was added to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage in 2017.
