Tokyo 2020

London 2012

Beijing 2008

Answer: Tokyo 2020

At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, which were postponed to 2021 because of the COVID-19 epidemic, sport climbing made its Olympic debut. There were two events, one for men and one for women.

Controversially, the format consisted of a single competition that merged the three disciplines of bouldering, speed climbing, and lead climbing. The medals were awarded based on the top results in each of the three disciplines. The Summer Youth Olympics of 2018 served as an earlier test for this model. Sport climbing’s Olympic designation is CLB.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) formally declared sport climbing to be a medal sport at the 2020 Summer Olympics on August 3, 2016. The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) first suggested the addition in 2015.

There was a lot of backlash in the climbing community when it was decided to combine the three disciplines of lead climbing, bouldering, and speed climbing into one competition with one set of medals for each gender.

For sport climbing, there were 40 quota slots available. A maximum of two spots per event could be obtained by each National Olympic Committee (total 4 maximum across the 2 events). Twenty participants qualified for each event: 18 from qualification, 1 from the host (Japan), and 1 from invites from the Tripartite Commission.

The 2019 IFSC Climbing World Championships operated as a single qualification event, with the best 7 finishers in each gender receiving a spot in the competition.
