Answer: Kochi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned INS Vikrant an aircraft carrier, for the Indian Navy. The nation’s first indigenously produced vessel has been in the works as early as 1999 and was slated to be revealed in 2010, but its completion got delayed due to several reasons.
At 40,000 tonnes, INS Vikrant is the seventh largest aircraft carrier in the world. The hangar of the ship is the size of two Olympic swimming pools.
INS Vikrant can fit up to 1,700 sailors on board. It also has specialised compartments for women officers and sailors. The ship has two runways, a long take-off section for larger aircrafts at 206 metres and a short, and an emergency take-off section which is 145 metres long.
As per the Indian Navy, 76% of INS Vikrant was built domestically, from the warship grade steel to the equipment to its 2,5000 km long cabling system. The ship has the ability to carry 30 planes, most of which are MiG29Ks designed for operations on an aircraft carrier.
Vice Admiral Hampiholi further described the vessel being able to operate the “Kamov 31 which is an early air warning helicopter, the recently inducted but yet-to-be commissioned MH-60R which is a multi-role helicopter as also our very indigenous ALH”. He added, “It displaces about 45,000 tonnes which is definitely the largest warship in the Indian naval inventory.”
INS Vikrant represents the current government’s “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat” or “Make in India” push.
