Answer: Maharashtra

The nuclear power generating site in Jaitapur, Maharashtra, is a joint project by the French company EDF and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). The Hindu spoke to Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet, Consul General of France in Bombay, about the same.

During the conversation the diplomat explained the scope of the project, saying, “Jaitapur would be the world’s most powerful nuclear power plant. There would be six state-of-the-art EPR reactors with an installed capacity of 9.6 GWe that will produce low carbon electricity. It would provide electricity to seven crore households.”

He continued that the project was a symbol of the strong ties between India and France, helmed by the respective leaders Narendra Modi and Emmanuel Macron, and would result in numerous jobs for the people of Maharashtra, besides showing a commitment to a low carbon future.

The project aims to engage India’s industrial sector. The Consul General also told The Hindu “In this spirit, EDF is deploying a strategy based on in-depth work to identify Indian companies that could be selected as suppliers. Some 200 Indian companies have already been pre-qualified. Pre-feasibility study, conducted by EDF, French I2EN (International Institute of Nuclear Energy) and Indian VJTI (Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute), for the establishment of a centre of excellence in India to train engineers and technicians is on”.

However, at the time, he’d said that he wouldn’t be able to share information on when the project would be up and running.
