Jamshed Irani, the son of Jiji and Khorshed Irani, was born in Nagpur on June 2, 1936. He earned his BSc from Science College in 1956 and his MSc in Geology from Nagpur University in 1958. As a J N Tata scholar, he travelled to the University of Sheffield in the UK, where he earned a Masters in Metallurgy in 1960. Later, in 1963, he earned a PhD in metallurgy.

In Sheffield, he began his working life in 1963 with the British Iron and Steel Research Association. He went back to India and started working for Tata Iron & Steel (now Tata Steel). He was employed by the company as the Director of Research and Development’s assistant. Later, he rose through the ranks to become Tata Steel’s president in 1985, general manager in 1979, and general superintendent in 1978.

After Irani’s death, Tata Steel tweeted, “We are deeply saddened at the demise of Padma Bhushan Dr. Jamshed J Irani, fondly known as the Steel Man of India. Tata Steel family offers its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones”.

Irani, who received the Padma Bhushan in 2007 for his contributions to business, withdrew from the Tata Steel board in June 2011 and left a 43-year legacy. His family included three children, Zubin, Niloufer, and Tanaaz, as well as his wife Daisy Irani.
